John Keck was born in April 1850 at Pittsburgh, the son of John Keck and Christina Spangler. He was in Cincinnati by 1870, a young man of twenty one boarding in Ward 18, and he married Pauline Wuest at about that time.

The 1880 census has him at thirty, a manufacturer of mattresses, with Pauline and two small children. By 1900 the household is in Ward 7 and by 1910 it is in Ward 11, which is the ward his son Charles stayed in for the rest of his life. His last certificate gives his trade as core maker, the man who shapes the sand cores that hollow out an iron casting, so he finished in the foundry work the city ran on.

He died on 1 August 1917 and was buried at Saint Mary Cemetery in Saint Bernard, Section 18, Lot 4, Grave 1. Pauline signed the certificate as informant and gave her address as 4561 Mitchell Avenue.

She took ten years off him. The certificate says he was born on 16 April 1860 and was fifty seven. Three censuses put his birth in 1850, he was twenty one in 1870, and his eldest son was born in April 1871. Eleven years later the same ten years came off her.
