Charles Paul Keck was born at Cincinnati on 31 December 1882, a date that comes from his own Social Security file rather than from anyone's recollection. He registered for the draft twice, in 1917 and again in the old man's registration of 1942.
The census asked where each person's parents were born. His father was born in Pennsylvania. His mother was born in Germany. He gave the same answer thirty years later, in 1950, when the enumerator wrote USA and Germany.
He married into a house and never left it. His wife was Anna Mathilda Ruckelshausen, and her father died at 2347 Victor Street in 1909. In 1940 Charles is living in that house at fifty nine, entered under his widowed mother-in-law, who is the head. She died there in 1943. In 1950 he is sixty eight and at house number 2347 himself, head of the household, working as a watchman for a department store, with Anna at sixty two beside him. His son Charles was a service manager for a department store in the same census, one at the door and one behind the counter.
Anna died in 1955. He died on 24 October 1960, aged seventy seven, and was buried beside her at Saint Mary Cemetery in Saint Bernard, Section 21A, Lot 64, Grave 1.
He was a twin. His parents were John Keck, a Pittsburgh man who made mattresses and finished in a foundry, and Pauline Wuest, who came out of Germany at six. On the last day of 1882 they had two sons. The 1900 census has Charles and Harry side by side in Ward 7, both seventeen, both entered as born in January 1883.
Harry William Keck never married. He was a hotel porter, he was living at the Columbian Hotel on Elm Street when he died in 1942, and it is his death certificate, not his brother's, that names the parents of both of them. Charles named his own first son Harry.
His father and mother lie in Section 18 of the same cemetery he was buried in.
