John Lamon
John Lamon was born on 27 April 1816 in Germany, by his gravestone. A compiled family record places his birth in Baden. He was in Texas by 1846, and on 29 November of that year he married Mary Anna Bader at San Antonio. She was twenty, the daughter of the Alsatian colonist Joseph Bader, who had come out with Henri Castro's settlers in 1844. The marriage was blessed again in St. Louis Church at Castroville on 25 May 1849.
In 1850 the family was living in Castroville. On 5 August 1850 John was elected sheriff of Medina County, which had been organized only two years before, and he served until 2 August 1852.
John and Mary Anna had three children: Joseph William in 1848, Mary Josephine in 1850 and Mary Ann, called Anna, in 1852.
John registered to vote in Medina County in February 1872. He died on 14 March 1882, at sixty-five, and was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville. His stone shows two clasped hands above his name and a German verse that begins "Ich starb hier im fremden Land," "I died here in a foreign land."
