John Lewis
John Lewis married Elizabeth Doty at Rochester, Massachusetts, on 28 February 1705/6. The Rochester clerk entered it as "John and Elizabeth Doty, Feb. 28, 1705-6." Where John came from, and who his parents were, is not known.
The couple's children were recorded in two towns. At Dartmouth the clerk spelled the family name Luis. Archelaus was entered there as born on the 7th day of the 2nd month, 1707. The clerk was counting months in the Quaker way, from March, so the 2nd month was April. John followed on 1 October 1708. Susanna was entered at Rochester as "Susana, d. John and Elizabeth", born 25 February 1709/10.
John died at Dartmouth on 24 January 1711/12. The clerk wrote his death into the book after the births of his children. His daughter Elizabeth was born eleven weeks later, on 12 April 1712. No probate of his estate is known.
Eighteen years after his death his daughter Susanna married Benjamin Taber before the Dartmouth Friends. Her marriage certificate calls her "daughter of John Luis late of Dartmouth ... Deceased". That line is what joins the Rochester bridegroom of 1706 to the Dartmouth father of these children.
