John Marion Francis was born on 18 May 1839. His memorial gives his birthplace as Buena Vista, Lewis County, Kentucky, a river landing opposite Adams County, Ohio. His death certificate says Ohio. The same certificate names his parents as John Francis and Minerva Evans, both born in Ohio.

He married Henrietta Grooms in 1862. She died in 1866, the year their son John William "Bill" Francis was born. A son named John Wheeler Francis, born in 1878, is also listed among his children.

In 1883 he married Luella Piatt, daughter of Benjamin Piatt Jr. and Elmira Bayless Piatt of Tiffin Township, Adams County. He was 43 or 44 and she was 18 or 19. Their children were Anna Belle (1886), Benedict Benjamin (1888), the twins David Evans and Carey Hall (both 1891), Izella (1896) and Jesse Stanley (1900). David Evans carried his grandmother's maiden name.

He farmed near West Union for the rest of his life. A tintype of John Marion and Luella survives: he sits bearded, in a dark coat with his boots showing, and she sits beside him in a dark dress with a light bow at the collar.

In his last years he had cancer of the left eye socket, which his doctor recorded as seven years' standing. His doctor had attended him since October 1920. He died at West Union on 19 August 1921, aged 82 years, 3 months and 1 day. Luella gave the details for his death certificate. Latour and Lafferty buried him on 21 August in Harmony Cemetery near West Union. His grave had no stone as of 2021.
