Carey Hall Francis
Carey Hall Francis was born on 28 July 1891 in Adams County, Ohio. He was a twin: his brother David Evans Francis was born the same year, in Jefferson Township. Their parents were John Marion Francis and Luella Piatt. His father was a farmer near West Union, fifty-two years old when the twins were born.
In the First World War Carey served as a private first class in the 314th Bakery Company of the Quartermaster Corps, one of the army units that baked bread for the troops. His government gravestone records the unit. He served nine months in France. In July 1919 he was mustered out at Camp Sherman, the army camp at Chillicothe, Ohio, and the West Union paper reported that "Hall Francis arrived home Tuesday."
On 28 February 1920 he married Elma Matilda Bayless, who was eighteen. The Rev. W. C. Wamsley married them at his own home in West Union. The marriage record names his parents as John Francis and Louella Piatt, and hers as George Bayless and Mary A. Fleming. Elma's grandfather Daniel Bayless was, by the memorial written for Luella's mother Elmira Bayless, Elmira's brother. If that is right, Carey and Elma were second cousins.
Their first child, Wyona Marie Francis, was born and died in 1921. Robert Melvin Francis followed in 1922, then Geneva Naomi (1924), Bruce Parker (1926), Elsie Cora (1930), Anna L (1932), Mary Ellen (1940) and Samuel Oliver (1944).
Carey Hall Francis died in Adams County on 29 July 1962, the day after his 71st birthday. He is buried in Section 4 of West Union Cemetery in West Union, Ohio, under a flat granite marker reading CAREY H FRANCIS, OHIO, PFC 314 BAKERY CO QMC, WORLD WAR I, JULY 28 1891, JULY 29 1962.
