John Moulton
John Moulton was born at Wenham, Massachusetts, on 4 October 1668. The town record enters him as "John, s. James." His father James Moulton had been baptized at Salem and had married Elizabeth Adams at Wenham in 1662. His grandfather, also James, was one of Wenham's first and wealthiest settlers.
On 16 August 1693 he married Sarah Conant, daughter of Exercise Conant of Beverly. The Rev. John Hale of Beverly married them. Sarah's grandfather was Roger Conant, who had brought the first settlers to Salem in 1626 and had died at Beverly in 1679.
Their eight children were all recorded at Wenham as children of John and Sarah: Mary on 10 June 1696, John on 1 October 1698, Abigail on 27 March 1701, Josiah on 16 July 1703, Hannah in April 1706, Sarah on 29 August 1709, Samuel on 19 October 1710 and Benjamin on 7 January 1712.
In 1699 he bought from his father-in-law a large tract in the north of the colony. It was two hundred acres near Dunstable, on the New Hampshire line, that the General Court had granted Roger Conant in 1671. Exercise Conant sold it to him for eight pounds.
John Moulton served Wenham as a selectman. In 1718 he laid out the boundary lines between Wenham and Beverly. He died before December 1728. His estate was settled on 18 December 1728 by his son John and John Herrick of Beverly, and it came to 324 pounds 17 shillings.
His son Josiah died in 1730 at twenty-six. Mary married John Bingham of Windham, Connecticut, in 1721. John married Hannah Kilham of Wenham. Hannah married Joseph Ayres, Sarah married Moses May, and Benjamin married Tabitha Howard of Ipswich. Samuel married Sarah Fisk in 1733, and three of his sons settled Castleton, Vermont, in 1771.
