John Mullins

b. 1784 · North Carolina
Born 1784, North Carolina
Children include Mary

John Mullins was living in the North Carolina mountains in 1815, when his daughter Mary Jane was born there. Her death was entered in the Dickenson County register in 1893 as Mary Fleming, born in Yancey County, North Carolina, a daughter of John Mullins and Ollie. Yancey County was formed in 1833 out of Buncombe and Burke counties, so in 1815 the place carried another county's name.

In 1829 he moved his family over the mountains to Holly Creek in southwest Virginia, then the back country of Russell County and now the town of Clintwood. A granite monument in front of the Clintwood library tells it: "In 1829 Mary Jane Mullins, at age fourteen, was the first pioneer lady to settle here at Holly Creek (now Clintwood) with her father John Mullins and three younger brothers." The monument names no mother.

Four years after the move, about 1833, Mary Jane married John J. Fleming. Their farm on Holly Creek became Flemingtown, and twelve children grew up on it. Family accounts call her father Holly Creek John Mullins, to tell him from the many other John Mullinses of these hills, and name her mother Ollie Cox.

In 1850 the census taker found him still in Russell County, which then took in Holly Creek, as John Mullins, 66, born in North Carolina, with his wife Olea, 58, also born in North Carolina, and a girl of fifteen, Haysey. That puts his birth about 1784 and hers about 1792. Twenty-five households away lived a young Marshall Mullins and his wife Eliza. When John Mullins died is not known.
