John Niles
John Niles was born at Braintree on 10 October 1678. The town clerk entered him as "John Nile, the son of Increase, Nile & Mary his wife". His parents were Increase Niles and Mary Purchase, who had been married the December before, on the 4th, by the governor of the colony, John Leverett, himself. The town wrote the family name Nile as often as Niles.
He married Margaret Nash. The marriage itself is not in the Braintree register, and the couple is known from their children's births. By Margaret he had Daniel on 24 October 1712, Lydia on 18 December 1719 and Peter on 27 March 1722, and the death register names another son, Nathan. The clerk who entered Daniel's birth spelled the father 'John niel'.
He died on 7 May 1751, and his family followed within ten days: Margaret on the tenth, their kinsman Ebenezer on the eleventh, their son Peter on the fourteenth, their kinswoman Mary Clark on the seventeenth. Nathan is entered as dying May the fifteenth 1753, close enough to the pattern that a copyist's slip is possible. Something contagious went through one Braintree household that May, and the record does not say what.
