John S. Aud
Born about 1812 in Kentucky, and by his own answer on the 1880 census the son of a Kentucky-born father and a Maryland-born mother, which is the old Aud road exactly: an English Catholic family out of Maryland that came down into Kentucky. He was farming White County, Illinois by 1850, with his Tennessee-born wife Permelia, seven-year-old Margaret Ellen, and a twenty-three-year-old Henry L. Aud, born in Tennessee and likely his brother, under the same roof. Widowed, he remarried a New York woman named Arlettie and in 1880 was still farming at Herald Prairie, a neighbor of his son-in-law George Hicks. He died October 18, 1888 at Norris City. A Find a Grave memorial carrying his dates stands at a Moore Cemetery tagged in Hawkins County, Tennessee, but Permelia's memorial sits at a Moore Cemetery tagged in Illinois and a young John M. Aud's at one in Mississippi; probably one family plot tagged in three states, so where the Auds actually lie is not settled.
