John Samuel Burger was born in 1872, the son of David Burger and Nannie Burger. His gravestone gives his birth as 4 May 1872. His death certificate gives 27 December 1871, and the funeral home's record of his burial gives the same December date with Rockbridge County as his birthplace. His marriage license of 1901 says he was born in Botetourt County.

On 11 March 1901 the clerk of the Botetourt County court issued him a license to marry Willie Grady. He was 28 and single, and he gave his occupation as farming. Her parents were Jewett and Mollie Grady. The wedding took place the next day, 12 March 1901, at Mrs. Grady's house in Botetourt County. Willie's father had died eight years before, so the house was her widowed mother's. The minister was Jonas Graybill of the German Baptist, or Dunkard, Church. The Dunkards, later called the Church of the Brethren, were a plain German Baptist people who baptized adults by dipping them three times, and they had a congregation at Troutville, where Willie's mother worshipped.

John and Willie had nine children between 1901 and 1919: Nettie Priscilla, Grace, Oscar, Doarse Matthew, Paul Amous, Roy Mont, Pauline Clara, Price John and Frances Lucille. The family farmed in the Big Lick district of Roanoke County, around Bonsack, just east of the city of Roanoke. In 1920 John and Willie were there with Nettie, Roy, Paul, Doarse, Pauline, Price and Frances.

Their son Oscar died in 1926, at about 21. Willie died at home at Bonsack on 31 August 1929, of cancer, and was buried in the Bonsack cemetery after a service at the Brethren church in Roanoke. In 1930 John was a widower in the Big Lick district, still keeping house for Paul, Roy, Pauline, Price and Frances.

John Samuel Burger died at Bonsack on 24 June 1944, at 72, and was buried beside Willie in Bonsack Cemetery. His stone reads JOHN S. BURGER, MAY 4, 1872, JUNE 24, 1944.
