Price John Burger
Price John Burger was born on 28 August 1916, the eighth of the nine children of John Samuel Burger and Willie Grady. The funeral home's record gives his birthplace as Botetourt County, and his draft card gives Roanoke. He grew up on the family farm in the Big Lick district of Roanoke County, around Bonsack. He was three in the census of 1920 and thirteen in that of 1930. His mother died at home in August 1929, when he was twelve, and her death notice listed "Price" among the children all of Bonsack.
As a young man Price served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, the New Deal work program that put young men from struggling families into camps to build parks and roads and plant forests. A photograph captioned "CCC Camp Douthat" shows him standing in front of a long frame barracks among bare trees, in a white jacket. The CCC camps at Douthat, in the mountains of Bath and Alleghany counties, built Douthat State Park, one of the first six state parks Virginia opened in 1936.
On 23 December 1939 he married Lula Frances Feathers at Roanoke, and they had two children, Gloria Jean and Roger Lee. On 16 October 1940 he registered for the draft at Roanoke. The marriage ended in a divorce at Roanoke on 12 December 1947.
On 16 April 1948, at Roanoke, Price married Mary Frances Adams, the daughter of George Henry Adams and Mae Amanda Secrist of Troutville. He was 31 and she was 29. Their daughter Carolyn Sue was born in 1950. The family made their home on Route 1, Troutville, near her parents.
A color photograph taken in April 1967 shows Price and Frances standing together in front of a brick house, he in a dark suit and tie and she in a blue flowered dress. He died at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Roanoke on 16 April 1967, the nineteenth anniversary of their wedding. He was 50. He was buried in Hill Crest Cemetery at Blue Ridge, Botetourt County. His funeral record named his children as Mrs. Jean St. Clair, Carolyn and Roger L. Burger, with five grandchildren, and his surviving brothers and sisters as Mrs. Frances Ocker, Mrs. Pauline Evans, Mrs. Grace Foutz, Mrs. Priscilla Lyle, Paul A. Burger and Roy M. Burger. His flat bronze-lettered stone reads PRICE J. BURGER, AUG. 28, 1916, APR. 16, 1967. Frances outlived him by 35 years and is buried beside him.
