John Spofford
John Spofford was born on 24 October 1648, a son of John Spofford and Elizabeth Scott of Rowley, Massachusetts. On 9 March 1675 he married Sarah Wheeler.
He "lived on the site of the original settlement on Spofford's Hill, in what is now Georgetown, where he died April 27, 1696-97, being interred in the old cemetery in Bradford, where his gravestone may now be seen." The words are Jeremiah Spofford's, in the family genealogy of 1888.
In his father's will of October 1678 he received "two stears coming three year old, and the long fowling-piece, and one halfe of the lease of the farm together with twenty pounds stocke I formerly gave him." His brother Samuel had the other half of the lease. The farm was the one at Spofford's Hill, and John stayed on it, "on the spot where the first house in Georgetown was built."
His son John was born on 12 June 1678. John married Dorcas Hopkinson in 1700 and settled on the old farm.
He left eight children. His inventory valued his real estate at 100 pounds and his personal property at 244 pounds. His daughter Martha married the younger Caleb Hopkinson, "known as Ensign Caleb Hopkinson", and after his death Ebenezer Kimball of Bradford. She is buried beside her first husband at Groveland.
Sarah was a widow for four years. On 12 June 1701 she married Caleb Hopkinson of Bradford. She died on 24 October 1732, aged eighty.
