John Wells
John Wells was born at Southold on Long Island on 31 January 1689. He was the second son of William Wells and Elizabeth Tuthill. His grandfather, also William Wells, had come to Southold in 1640 as one of its founders.
His father died on 17 October 1696, when John was seven. Three weeks before, his father had made his will. It named "my second son John Wells" and left him three lots of upland and meadow. His brothers were William and Henry, and he had a sister Mary.
He married first by about 1715. His wife's name is not known. She was the mother of at least one son and one daughter. His eldest son, John, was born about 1715, and his daughter Deborah in 1717. The other sons were Benjamin, Abijah and Samuel.
He married second the widow Martha Case. William Salmon, who kept a private register of Southold marriages and deaths, wrote it down: "Oct. 24 Jn Welse & Wid Martha Case." She died on 2 June 1723.
Before 1730 he left Southold with his family and moved to Goshen in Orange County, New York. He died at Goshen, probably between 1740 and 1760. His son John died there on 4 July 1776.
