John Wells was born about 1715, probably at Southold on Long Island, by Charles Wells Hayes's account of the family, published in 1878. He was the eldest son of John Wells, who was born at Southold on 31 January 1689 and moved to Goshen in Orange County before 1730. Hayes carries the line back through William Wells the second to William Wells, who came to Southold in 1640 and was its founder and the first sheriff of Yorkshire, the English county that took in Long Island.
Before 1740 he married a woman named Abigail. Their children were Israel, born at Goshen about 1740, Abigail about 1742, Joshua in 1744, and Mary. Hayes says his will of 1776 named his wife and four children. The will itself is not in the printed New York abstracts.
He died at Goshen on 4 July 1776. His widow made her own will in 1781. She left their son Israel "the small trunk his father used to keep his writings in."
