John Wilcox
John Wilcox was the son of John Wilcox of Hartford, Connecticut, who was a surveyor of highways in the 1640s and a selectman in 1649. He was called John Wilcox Jr. in 1648.
On 17 September 1646 he married Sarah Wadsworth, a daughter of William Wadsworth of Hartford. Their daughter Sarah was born on 3 October 1648. His wife died soon after, and on 18 January 1650 he married Catherine Stoughton, a daughter of Thomas Stoughton, who had moved from Dorchester, Massachusetts, to Windsor. Catherine bore him John, Thomas, Mary, Israel and Samuel, the last in November 1658.
After Catherine died he married Mary, the widow of Joseph Farnsworth of Dorchester and before that of a Long. He lived at Dorchester for some years. He served as fence viewer there in 1661 and 1662. In April 1661 he and "Mary his wife, executrix of the will of Joseph Farnsworth" sold land to William Pond. Mary's two Long sons came with her, and in 1666 the younger, Thomas, married John's daughter Sarah.
He moved to Middletown, Connecticut. Mary died there in 1671, after making a will by word of mouth, and John told the court in September that he had given her leave to make it. His fourth wife, Esther Cornwell, a daughter of William Cornwell, bore him Ephraim in 1672, Esther in 1673 and Mary in 1676.
He died at Middletown on 24 May 1676. The court ordered the estate divided in March 1677. The note on the inventory names his living children: "Sarah Long, near 28 years old; Israel, 20 year old; Samuel, Nov. 9, '76, 18 year old; Ephraim, 4 year old 9 July, 1676; Hester, 2 years old Dec. the last, 1675; Mary was born the 9, 1675-6."
