Jonathan French was born at Ipswich in Massachusetts on 30 July 1667. A family book of 1919, The Descendants of Andrew Warner, names his parents as John and Freedom (Kingsley) French.

About 1692 he married Sarah Warner of Hadley, the eldest daughter of Isaac and Sarah (Boltwood) Warner, and they settled at Northampton. Their first child, Jonathan, was born on 28 August 1693 and died on 5 February 1696/7. Sarah followed on 1 March 1694/5, then Hannah in 1697, Mary about 1698/9, Elizabeth on 15 November 1700, a second Jonathan in 1702, and Ebenezer, Samuel and John.

He died at Northampton on 17 February 1714. He was forty six, and his youngest children were small. On 19 March Ebenezer Strong, John Kingsley and Ebenezer Wright took the inventory of his estate. It came to 107 pounds 4 shillings and 8 pence, and on 6 May "Sarah the Relict of Jon. Frentch of Northampton deceased" presented it to the court. She administered the estate for more than ten years.

The estate was settled on 28 January 1724/5. The land was valued at 103 pounds 10 shillings, the movable goods at 32 pounds 7 shillings and 5 pence, and after fees the whole came to 134 pounds 15 shillings and 5 pence. The eldest surviving son, Jonathan, was to have a double portion of 29 pounds 10 shillings. Every other child was to have 14 pounds 19 shillings and 6 pence: Ebenezer, Samuel, John, "Sarah Frentch alias Coss," "Hannah Frentch alias Edwards," "Mary Frentch alias Edwards," and "Elizabeth Frentch alias Bascomb." Since "this estate being mostly in land and it will not be broken without damage," the whole of it went to Jonathan, who was to pay his brothers and sisters their shares. The settlement was made "to the satisfaction of the wido Sarah Frentch the mother of them all."

His daughters' marriages carried the family out of Northampton. Sarah married Sergeant Ebenezer Corse in 1715 and later lived at Southampton. Hannah's first husband, Nathaniel Edwards, was killed by Indians in 1724, and she married Nehemiah Strong. Mary married Joseph Edwards and went with him to Coventry in Connecticut, and later married Denis Meraw. Elizabeth married Daniel Bascom in 1723 and went to Lebanon in Connecticut. The second Jonathan died at Windham in 1743.
