Joseph Franklin Mink
Joseph Franklin Mink was born on 25 March 1874 in Itawamba County, Mississippi. His father was a Methodist circuit rider, one of the preachers who travelled a round of country churches on horseback, and was remembered as one of the old-time and best-loved preachers of northeast Itawamba County.
Joseph farmed and acquired land south of Red Bay, near the Alabama line. With his first wife, Minnie Lee, he had a family that included Audie, Annie, Archie Floyd and Myrtle. After Minnie's death he married Ida Irene Reeves, more than twenty-five years younger than he was. Their children were Arlis Junior (1927), Robert Ollis (1928, died a baby), Oniece, George T., Lorece, Hazel, Charles and Vernell, the youngest born in 1940.
On 4 May 1949 Joseph was at the Itawamba County courthouse as a witness in a lawsuit that was being tried. He fell from his seat. Dr. W. L. Orr was called at once and pronounced him dead in less than five minutes, of a heart ailment. The obituary called him a "prominent Itawamba land owner and farmer" and "a devout Christian and a leader in his community." Within the last week he had completed a new home for himself and his family, but had not moved into it.
His funeral was held on 6 May. He was buried at New Hope Cemetery, about five miles south of Red Bay. He left his widow, Ida Reeves Mink, seven children of their marriage and four of the first. The obituary named Floyd Mink of Cleveland, Ohio, Audie Mink, Mrs. Don Scott, and Orlis, Onise, George T., Lorece, Hazel, Charles and Vernell, all of Red Bay, Route 1. His stone reads "Father is gone, but not forgotten."
His eldest son by his second marriage, Arlis, had married Roxie Bell Lindsey eighteen months earlier. Their daughter Brenda Sue, Joseph's granddaughter, was born that July.
