Joseph Henry Robinson
Joseph Henry Robinson, known as Joe, was born on 16 December 1886 in Texas. On his 1942 draft card he gave the place as Ellis, Texas; the family's account says Fannin County. His parents were both born in Arkansas. His mother, by family account, was Mary Elizabeth Perkins, called Mollie, who died in California in 1931; his father's name has not been recovered. His brothers and sisters were Arnold Edgar, Jennie, Earl Luther, Ada and Annabel.
He came to the Fletcher country of Comanche County, Oklahoma, as a young man. On 17 March 1908, aged 21, he applied at Lawton for a licence to marry Alice Hunter, nineteen, born in Arkansas and living at Fletcher, and the Rev. H. C. Griffin married them at Fletcher the next day, 18 March 1908, with J. H. Hunton and W. T. Vesper standing witness. The clerk's spelling of the bride's name was his own; her family signed Hunton, and that is the name two of her sons later gave for her.
The 1910 census found the couple farming in Brown Township with their first child, Glenn, one year old, and an eighteen-year-old Lee Robinson, born in Texas, in the house. The children came on through the 1910s: Ernest Richard, called Bill, in 1913, Lois in October 1919, Leonard and Delbert Neal in 1917. From 1930 the family was in Cedar Grove Township, east of Fletcher, where Lois went to school in the Cedar Grove community. In 1942, at 56, Joe registered for the fourth draft at Fletcher, telephone 5411F, working for himself, and named Sam Moore of Cement as the man who would always know where he was.
He and Alice were still at Fletcher in April 1950, and his daughter Lois and her husband Don Hooper farmed near by. Joe died on 6 October 1968, aged 81, and was buried in the Fletcher Cemetery, block 2, lot 4. Alice followed him in 1975. Their rose granite stone, cut ROBINSON with praying hands, carries both their dates. His sons Bill and Delbert lie near them.
