Joseph Pell had two daughters christened in the parish of Great and Little Hale in the Lincolnshire fens, Elianor on 12 November 1620 and Elizabetha on 7 September 1623. Elianor is taken to be Ellen Pell. Those two entries are all that is known of him in England until 1637.

The register of the great church at Boston, twelve miles away, has Joseph Pell and Johana Crockett, married 5 October 1637. Within about a year he had crossed. He was made a freeman of Massachusetts on 14 March 1638/9, kept a butcher's shop at Boston, married a third time about 1649, and died on 23 February 1650.

The estate he left is why so little more is known. The court accepted an "Agreement of Elizabeth Pell and the Children of her deceased Husband", dividing twenty one pounds seven shillings and threepence between a widow and children who are a share of an estate and never a name.

Online trees give him a baptism at Great Hale in October 1598, a father William Pell, a mother Suzanna Tipplar and a first marriage to Elizabeth Taylor at Great Hale on 5 November 1619. None of it is sourced, and no Pell and Taylor marriage appears in the indexed English collections. His first wife, the mother of his daughters, is not known.

The Joseph Pell of the fens and the Boston butcher are taken to be one man, and his daughter Elianor to be Ellen Pell, on name, place, date and the 1637 marriage a year before the crossing. No document states either identification.
