Joseph Reaves, written Reeves by the clerk, married Sally Hendrick in Lauderdale County, in the far north of Alabama on the Tennessee line. The county court clerk issued the license on 1 May 1822. A justice of the peace married them the next day, and the return was recorded on 17 May. The bride was Sarah Kendrick, called Sally, the eighteen-year-old daughter of Jesse Kendrick.

A life sketch of their son, written by a descendant, calls him Joseph Allen Reaves Sr. and gives his years as 1803 to 1864. The family lived in Lauderdale County until about 1845 and then moved north into Wayne County, Tennessee. Their children included Joseph Allen, born on 5 June 1834, who carried his father's name and was called Jr. all his life; Mary Ann; George W.; and Nancy Emaline, born in Tennessee on 27 January 1848.

By 1860 Sarah was keeping house in McNairy County, Tennessee, with only the three youngest children, and no Joseph appears with them. Family accounts say he died about 1864, perhaps in the Civil War. Where he died and where he is buried are not known. In the early 1860s Sarah took the children to Bell County, Texas, where her brother, the preacher and physician Carroll Kendrick, lived.

Two of the children married into one Johnson family. Joseph Allen married Samantha Caldonia Johnson in 1871, and the next year Nancy Emaline married her brother, William Walter Johnson.
