Joseph Allen Reaves Jr.
Joseph Allen Reaves Jr., called Jack, was born on 5 June 1834 in Coosa County, Alabama. A life sketch written by a great-great-grandson names his parents as Joseph Allen Reaves Sr. and Sarah "Sally" Kendrick, and says he grew up near Lauderdale in Alabama, one of five children.
He came to Texas before the Civil War. When Texas joined the Confederacy he enlisted in Company E of the 2nd Texas Infantry, and his military stone at Friendship Cemetery reads "J. A. Reaves, Co. E, 2 Tex. Inf., C.S.A."
On 18 January 1871, at Milam in Sabine County, he married Samantha Caldonia "Donia" Johnson, a Louisiana girl nineteen years younger. They farmed in Milam County and had thirteen children. Joseph also rode as a circuit preacher of the Church of Christ, filling in at congregations near home that had no regular minister. Four of his daughters, Stella Lee among them, married sons of Arthur Cryer.
A family photograph taken on Christmas Eve 1894 shows Jack, with a small child on his knee, among Donia and their children, when she was carrying their last daughter, Artie Mae, born the next day. Another shows the old couple standing together, Jack with a cane. He died at Buckholts on 29 November 1923, aged 89, and is buried at Friendship Cemetery.
