Joseph Seymour was the father of Bildad Seymour of Colebrook, Connecticut, born in 1766. He was the third settler of Colebrook and one of the founders of the town. He came there from Windsor in February or March 1766, when the township in the hills of Litchfield County was just being opened.
By one account he was born at Windsor on 26 December 1741. On 5 April 1777 he enlisted in Capt. Hammond's company of the 4th Connecticut Line, a regiment of the Continental army. He died at Colebrook on 14 August 1806.
Another account makes Bildad's father the Joseph Seymour baptized at Hartford on 14 July 1728, the youngest son of Zachariah Seymour and Hannah Olmstead. Franklin Hough's History of Lewis County gives the line as "(3) Zachariah, of Hartford; (4) Joseph, of Hartford and Colebrook; (5) Bildad." A man born at Windsor in 1741 cannot be the boy baptized at Hartford in 1728, and his parents are not known.
His wife, Bildad's mother, is not known.
