Bildad Seymour
Bildad Seymour was born on 13 January 1766, by the dates on his memorial, and was of Colebrook in Litchfield County, Connecticut. He was a son of Joseph Seymour of Hartford. Franklin Hough, writing the Seymour family into his History of Lewis County in 1883, gave the line as "(1) Richard, who settled in Hartford, Conn., about 1640; (2) John, of Hartford; (3) Zachariah, of Hartford; (4) Joseph, of Hartford and Colebrook; (5) Bildad, of Colebrook and Turin."
He married Jemima Hurd in 1794. He was a carpenter and farmer and a member of the Congregational church of Colebrook. Their children included Alva, born at Colebrook on 13 November 1795; Caroline, born about March 1797; Chloe, born in 1800; Abigail, born in 1805, who married a Hart; and Susan, born in 1813, who married a Shepard.
Caroline married Joseph Gaylord of Norfolk in December 1817. That Bildad was her father rests on Hough. Hough names Bildad as Alva's father, and says Alva bought his farm at Turin "with his brother-in-law, Joseph Gaylord." Alva's own wife was a Cowles of Norfolk, so the brother-in-law came through Caroline.
In 1822 or 1823 Bildad and Jemima were dismissed by letter from the Colebrook church to "the Black River Country, N.Y." A letter of dismission was a church's certificate that a member in good standing was leaving to join a church elsewhere. In March 1825 Alva married Sophronia C. Cowles of Norfolk, and in May he and Joseph Gaylord moved their families onto two hundred acres at Turin, bought from Squire Stickney and Dr. Royal Dewey.
Bildad Seymour died at Turin on 10 February 1828, aged sixty two, and is buried in the Collinsville Cemetery there. Jemima survived him by more than twenty years.
