Joseph Sutliffe Jr.
Joseph Sutliffe Jr. was born at Durham in Connecticut on 1 January 1733 and went afterwards to Wolcott, where he lived on the farm later owned by Ephraim Hall, a little east of Chestnut Hill and so within sight of his father's place at the foot of it.
He married on 2 April 1771, at thirty eight, and he married a widow: Zerviah Webster, born at Hebron in 1740, a daughter of Thomas Webster of Bolton and the widow of Joseph Cobb. The Webster genealogy calls him "Joseph Sutliff, or Sutlief, of Bolton" at the time, and says the couple "soon after removed to Wolcott." Six children followed in eleven years. The second of them, Joseph, born 27 December 1773, was the second child ever baptised in Wolcott, which dates the parish as precisely as it dates the boy.
He died at Wolcott on 11 November 1801, aged sixty seven, by the Webster genealogy of 1915; the Sutliffe genealogies give 1 October 1795, at sixty two. In 1801 his children were between nineteen and twenty nine, and his son Michael had already been lost at sea.
