Joseph Sutliff

Joseph Sutliff was born at Wolcott in Connecticut on 27 December 1773, the second child of Joseph Sutliffe Jr. and Zerviah Webster, and was the second child ever baptised in that parish. Wolcott had only just been set off as an ecclesiastical society, so the register he was entered in was almost empty when his name went into it.

He married Mary Webster, called Polly, in Connecticut, and their eldest, Clarissa, was born at Woodbury on 22 August 1798. They had eight children over nineteen years, two of whom died in infancy. In 1815 he took the family to Bethel in Sullivan County, New York, and afterwards on to Damascus township in Wayne County, Pennsylvania, across the Delaware from the New York line.

His wife died at Damascus on 20 May 1833. He died there on 13 February 1844, at seventy. Between his baptism in a brand new Connecticut parish and his death on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware, he had moved his household twice into country that was being settled as he arrived in it.
