Joseph White
Joseph White was a son of Nicholas White and Susanna Foster. He was probably born at Dorchester in the early 1650s, one of the five small children his father described in a petition of 1656. The family moved to Taunton in the Plymouth Colony about 1655.
He lived in Taunton on the west side of Scaddings Pond and owned land around Scaddings and Watson's ponds. He was a soldier in King Philip's War and was wounded in the Great Swamp Fight in the Narragansett country in December 1675. The Plymouth Colony records list him among the men paid bounties for killing wolves.
He married a woman named Mary. Their children were born at Taunton between 1682 and the early 1700s: Lydia, Joseph, Edward, Mary, Susanna, William, Nathaniel, Ebenezer, Ephraim and Elizabeth. In 1698 he shared in the division of his father's estate with his brothers Nicholas and John and his sister Elizabeth.
He died in 1724. His eldest son, Joseph, was appointed administrator on 16 November 1724. On 7 July 1725 the heirs signed an agreement dividing the estate. Joseph, Edward and Ephraim were then living in Taunton, William and Ebenezer in Norton, and Lydia Fisher and Mary Wetherell in Norton.
