Susanna Foster
Susanna Foster was baptised at Wendover, Buckinghamshire, in the summer of 1616, a daughter of Thomas Foster, a fuller, and Elizabeth Seamer. The index of the Wendover register gives 16 June 1616, "father Thomas Foster". A published study of the family gives 14 July.
Her father made his will on 23 February 1617/18, naming her with her sisters Christian and Elizabeth and her brother Thomas. He was buried a week later. She was not yet two.
On 8 November 1619 her mother married Jonas Humphrey at Turville. He was a Wendover man, a widower with children of his own, and a half-brother, Jonas, was baptised in 1621. By 1637 the family was at Dorchester in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, where Jonas Humphrey was a tanner. Susanna probably came with them.
About 1643 she married Nicholas White of Dorchester. Their eldest child, Elizabeth, was born there on 9 June 1643. In 1647 Nicholas bought land at Uncaty, the part of Dorchester that became Milton, and built a house on it. An older claim to the title turned them out before they could harvest a crop. By 1656 they had five small children and had moved to Taunton, in the Plymouth Colony.
When Jonas Humphrey made his will in March 1662 he called her "my daughter Susanna White". Wills of the time commonly named a stepchild that way. Because of it, older genealogies call her Susanna Humphrey and make her his daughter.
Her children were Elizabeth, who married Samuel Hall, Nicholas, John and Joseph. Her husband died at Taunton in 1697. Her own death has not been found.
