Joshua Fobes was born at Bridgewater, Massachusetts, in 1689, the seventh of nine children of Deacon Edward Fobes and Elizabeth Howard. His brothers were John, Ephraim, Benjamin and William. His sisters were Elizabeth, Mary, Bethiah and Hannah, and three of the four married Keiths. He carried the name of an uncle, his father's brother Joshua, who had been killed in King Philip's War thirteen years before he was born.

In 1711 he married Abigail, a daughter of Peter Dunbar. They had one son and six daughters: Bethiah 1712, Hannah 1713, Joshua 1715, Mary 1717, Leah 1720, Betty 1724 and Abigail 1728. The Bridgewater clerk entered Bethia, Bettie and Abigail as children of "Joshua and Abigail". Mary married Robert Washburn in 1739, Leah married Israel Washburn in 1740, and Abigail married Daniel Snow of Titicut in 1753. Mitchell adds that he "perhaps" married a second wife, Mercy Churchill of Plympton, in 1754.

He made his home at Titicut, the stretch of the Taunton River where North Middleborough meets South Bridgewater. A granite memorial in the Vernon Street Cemetery at Bridgewater, set up long after his death, reads: "In memory of Joshua Fobes son of Dea. Edward Fobes died 1767 aged 78 yrs. The first white settler in Titicut." It is a cenotaph, a memorial stone rather than a gravestone.

He died in 1767, at seventy eight. He is said to have been "found dead in his bed".
