Joshua Hotchkiss
Joshua Hotchkiss was born at New Haven on 16 September 1651, the fourth child of Samuel Hotchkiss and Elizabeth Cleverly, and he was sheriff there.
He married three times. Mary, daughter of George Pardee and Martha Miles, married him on 29 November 1677 and was dead by about 1684, having borne him a Mary who died young, a Stephen, and the Martha who married Thomas Brooks. He married second, about 1685, Hannah Tuttle, who bore eight more children and died in February 1718/9. He married third, about 1719, Mary Sanford, the widow of Joseph Ashburn of Milford, who survived him and married again.
He was baptised as an adult on 18 February 1693/4, at forty two, and two of his children by Mary were baptised the same day, Stephen at twelve and Martha at ten. Men of that generation often came into the church late, when they came in at all.
He died between 7 April and 1 October 1722, which are the dates of the last document he signed and the first that treats him as dead.
