Martha Hotchkiss

Martha Hotchkiss was born at New Haven on 14 December 1683, the youngest child of Joshua Hotchkiss and Mary Pardee, and her mother died within the year.

She was baptised at ten, on 18 February 1693/4, the same day as her father and her brother Stephen. Her father was forty two and came to the font with them.

On 25 March 1702, at eighteen, she married Thomas Brooks and moved with him into the Cheshire parish of Wallingford. She bore ten children between May 1703 and December 1725, and on 30 May 1725 all but the last were baptised together at the Cheshire church, the eldest twenty two. Her husband died in 1732 and she lived on about twenty three years more.

Davis's History of Wallingford (1870) runs two or three men named Joshua Hotchkiss together under one heading, giving the resulting man children spread over fifty nine years and a death that puts his own birth after his daughter's, and gives her birth as 14 December 1680. The New Haven records keep the men apart and give 14 December 1683.
