Josiah Patterson Gore
Josiah Patterson Gore was born on 12 September 1839. His grave memorial gives his birthplace as Little Rock, Arkansas; the army's descriptive rolls, written while he was a soldier, give it as Union County, Illinois. He grew up farming in the hill country of southern Illinois.
When the Civil War came he enlisted as a private in Company G of the 9th Illinois Infantry. The descriptive roll calls him twenty-one, single, a farmer living in Johnson County, five feet six, with sandy hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. The printed roll of his company lists men "Killed at Shiloh Apr. 6, '62," the first day of the battle in southwest Tennessee that was then the bloodiest in American history.
He stayed with the regiment. On 4 January 1864, at Athens, Alabama, he re-enlisted as a veteran for three more years, signed by Captain Clements, and was mustered in again on 25 January. Men who re-enlisted as veterans that winter were given a furlough home. On 27 February 1864, in Johnson County, Josiah married Nancy Eliza Wilhelm, a nineteen-year-old Johnson County girl. He went back to the war as a corporal in Company A of the consolidated regiment and was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, on 9 July 1865.
Josiah and Nancy raised ten children in Johnson County. Their oldest son, Barnett Franklin, called Barney, was born on 9 May 1866. When Barney married Rosa Ragsdale in 1885, the marriage record named his father as J. P. Gore and his mother's family as Wilhelm. Two sons, Gideon and Otto, died young, at eighteen in 1889 and at twenty in 1894.
Josiah Patterson Gore died in Johnson County on 31 July 1895, aged fifty-five, and was buried in Mount Pisgah Cemetery. He did not live to see 1900, the year his widow Nancy, his son Barney and his daughter Lizzie all died.
