Judith McFail
Judith was the wife of James McFail, a Revolutionary soldier. Her maiden name is not known. Her children Nancy and Catherine were born in the Barnwell District of South Carolina in 1786 and 1789, and the family settled at Taylors Creek in Liberty County, Georgia. Her daughters married the brothers William and John Hendry in 1807 and 1808.
James McFail died between 1817 and 1820. About 1825 Judith moved with her younger children, and with the families of William and John Hendry, from Liberty County to Lowndes County, Georgia. They settled a few miles north of the present town of Quitman, in what is now Brooks County. The 1830 census of Lowndes County shows Judith McFall as the head of a household. As the widow of a Revolutionary soldier she drew land in the Cherokee Land Lottery of 1832 while living in Gouldings District of Lowndes County. The printed list of the draws, published in 1838, records her prize in a single line: "Judith M'Fail, w. r. s., Goulding's, Lowndes." The letters stand for "widow of a Revolutionary soldier." She drew lot 170 in the Sixth District of the Fourth Section of the Cherokee country, in the far northwest of Georgia.
Later she went back to Taylors Creek and lived with her son Eli McFail until her death, some time after 1850.
