Catherine McFail was born on 18 April 1789 in the Barnwell District of South Carolina. Her father, James McFail, had served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Her mother was named Judith. The family moved to Liberty County, Georgia, and settled at Taylors Creek.

On 13 December 1808, in Liberty County, she married John Hendry, a carpenter and the eldest son of Robert Hendry of Taylors Creek. A year earlier her older sister Nancy had married John's brother William. Her father died in Liberty County between 1817 and 1820.

About 1825 Catherine and John moved inland to Lowndes County, Georgia, in what is now Brooks County. Her widowed mother and her younger brothers and sisters came too, along with William and Nancy Hendry. Catherine bore nine children between 1810 and 1832: John Jr., James Norton, Robert, Judith, Archibald, William McFail, Charles Wesley, Andrew Jackson and George Washington. In 1850 she and John were still in Lowndes County. Later they moved to Jennings, in Hamilton County, Florida, where John died in December 1858.

As a widow Catherine lived with her son John Jr., in Hamilton County in 1860. About 1869 she moved with him to Fort Green, in Manatee County, where her son Robert had died in 1863. She died there in 1889, a hundred years old by her recorded birth year. She has a marker in the Fort Green Methodist Cemetery, and the front of her son Robert's headstone in the Fort Green Baptist Cemetery also bears her name.
