Julia Elizabeth Prothro
Julia Elizabeth Prothro was born in Meriwether County, Georgia, on 21 February 1848. Memorials compiled by relatives give her parents as Clayton Prothro, called Judge, and Frances H. Bussey, and show the family settled in Union County, Arkansas, where her sister Sarah Lavinia, called Minnie, also married a Marrable.
She married William Dunaway Marrable, a Confederate veteran nine years older, after the war. Their eldest child, Jimmie, was born in 1866, when Julia was eighteen. She bore children for the next twenty-seven years: Fannie Daisy, who lived only from 1873 to 1875, Minnie Mae, Jennie Estelle, Donnie Bussey, whose middle name was her mother's maiden name, Jack Allen, and the youngest, Chatwin Emmett, born in October 1893 when she was 45.
When William died at their home southwest of El Dorado in December 1922, his obituary named "his widow, Julia Prothro Marrable" first among the survivors. She outlived him by little more than a year. Influenza took her in eight days. She died late on a Wednesday night in January 1924 at the Marrable home on the East Hillsboro road, a mile and a half from El Dorado, aged 75. The El Dorado Daily News called her "an old time resident of this community" and said she had come to Union County with her parents. She left four sons and three daughters, a brother, N. B. Prothro, near El Dorado, and two sisters, Mrs. J. I. Marrable of El Dorado and Mrs. Fannie Newton of Jonesboro, Louisiana. Like her husband she was of the Christadelphian faith, and the funeral was held at the home at ten the next morning.
She was buried in the Bethel Cemetery near William. Her grave is marked by a rough upright fieldstone, its face set with a small cast plaque that reads "JULIA L. MARRABLE BORN FEB. 21, 1848 DIED JAN. 24, 1924".
