Chatwin Emmett Marrable
Chatwin Emmett Marrable was born near El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas, on 8 October 1893. He was the youngest child of William Dunaway Marrable, a Confederate veteran who had come to Union County from Alabama as a small boy, and Julia Elizabeth Prothro, who was born in Georgia. His father was 54 when he was born, and his oldest sister, Jimmie, was already 27.
The family lived southwest of El Dorado. His father died at home there in December 1922, and the obituary named the surviving sons as "T.C. and C.E. Marrable of El Dorado, D.W. Marrable of Fort Worth, J.A. Marrable of Magnolia", with four daughters, Mrs. W. C. Purdue, Miss Minnie Marrable, Mrs. J. F. Hanie and Mrs. H. L. DeFee. His father belonged to the Christadelphians, a small Bible-based church with no clergy, and the funeral was held at the Marrable home.
In 1921 Chatwin married Jimmie Neal Murph, a girl born in Ouachita County whose family had moved to El Dorado when she was a child. The word MARRIED and the year 1921 are cut in the middle of their gravestone. Their son James Ivan was born on 11 March 1922, and a daughter, Dorothy Carmen, in 1928.
Chatwin and Jimmie lived out their lives at El Dorado and belonged to the Bethel Methodist Church, south of town. By the 1970s they lived at 203 Lilac Drive. Jimmie died on 29 October 1973 after a long illness, and her obituary listed him first among the survivors as "her husband, Chatwin E. Marrable of El Dorado".
He outlived her by six years and died at El Dorado on 9 November 1979, aged 86. He was buried in the Bethel Cemetery beside her and near his parents. Their shared stone reads MARRABLE across the top, with "CHATWIN E. OCT. 8, 1893 NOV. 9, 1979" on one side, "JIMMIE N." on the other, and "GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN" between them.
