Julia Henrick
Julia Henrick was born at Oswego, New York, in December 1858, the daughter of Edward Henrick and his wife Bridget, both born in Ireland. She grew up in the First Ward with her brother John and her sister Elizabeth, called Libbie. In the census of 1880 she was twenty-two, single, and working as a clerk, living at home with her parents, her brother and her sister. About 1885 she married Frederick J. Ratigan, a son of the First Ward of Oswego who worked in the meat business and later served as the city's harbormaster. They had three children, all of whom lived: William J., born about 1886, Luke, born about 1888, and Mary Agnes, born about 1891.
Land at Oswego was assessed in her own name in 1886, 1887 and 1888, and again in 1901 and 1913. In the census of 1900 she was the head of her household in the First Ward, forty-two years old and listed as married, with her three children at home and her husband not living with them. Frederick died on 8 April 1911 at his mother's house on West Eighth Street, and the Oswego Palladium named her first among his survivors.
By 1915 she was living at 97 West Seneca Street with her daughter Mary and her son William. On 20 December 1915 Mary married William Joseph Mack at St. Mary's Church, and the wedding notice described the bride as the daughter of Mrs. Julia Ratigan. Julia died less than three months later, on 11 March 1916, at Oswego. "Many friends will read with sorrow of the death of Mrs. Julia Ratigan, widow of Frederick J. Ratigan," the Palladium wrote. The house on West Seneca Street stayed with her daughter's family; her grandson, born in 1918, was given her husband's name, Frederick.
She was buried in Saint Paul's Cemetery, in the same section as her husband's family, under a flat granite stone that gives both her names: "Julia Henrick Ratigan, 1860, 1916." Her parents lie in the same section: her mother Bridget, who died in 1881, and her father Edward, a First Ward alderman, who died in 1888. Her brother John became a paving and canal contractor and lived on West Seneca Street, a few doors from her.
