Julia Marfica
Julia Marfica was born in June 1884 in the part of Poland then ruled by Austria, the province of Galicia. Her Social Security record gives 14 June 1884; her gravestone says 1882. In Polish her surname was Marchwica, and that is how her son Frank spelled it when he named his parents for Social Security. In Nebraska it was written Marfica or Marficia. A memorial written for her names her parents as George and Eva Marfica.
She came to America as a small child, in 1886 by the census. In June 1900, at sixteen, she was living in the first ward of Columbus, Nebraska, in the household of John Mielek, a Polish immigrant of forty who had come over in 1885 and was her brother-in-law. So an older sister had married in Nebraska before her.
On 29 July 1906, at St. Lawrence Catholic church in Silver Creek, she married Bartley Staniec. He was a widower more than twenty years older, with five children from his first marriage, the eldest fourteen. She was twenty two.
Julia had thirteen children of her own. Three died as babies. The ten who lived were Rose, Helen, John, Frank, Mary, Vera, Frances, Julia, Louis and Thomas. The family farmed in Nance and Merrick counties, and in 1930 they were at Prairie Creek in Nance County. They belonged to Saints Peter and Paul Catholic church at Krakow. Her son John died in 1937 and her daughter Rose McKay in 1940.
Bartley died in October 1948 and was laid out at the family home north of Havens. In April 1950 Julia was living in Silver Creek Township with her unmarried daughter Julia. She outlived Bartley by eighteen years. She died at Fullerton, Nebraska, in March 1967, the 5th by her memorial, and is buried beside him at Krakow.
