Katherine Cooke
Katherine Cooke was baptised at Westhorpe, in Suffolk, on 12 February 1540/1, nine months after her parents' wedding. The parish register reads "Katherine daughter of John Cook 12 February." Her son Thomas later wrote her into the family Bible in fuller words: "Katherine Kooke, dafter of John Kooke was baptised the : 12 : of february : 33 year Henry 8 : ano dni 1541. My mother."
Her father was John Cooke alias Carewe, and her mother was Alice, daughter of John Carter of Westhorpe. The family answered to two surnames. Her grandfather Humphrey was Humfrey Carew in the tax roll of 1523/4 and Humphrey Carewe alias Humphrey Coke in a land purchase of 1533. Her parents' wedding was entered as "John Carrowe, son of Humfrey", and her own baptism as daughter of John Cook.
She grew up the eldest of five. Joan was baptised in 1543, Mary in 1546/7, William in 1552 and John in 1553/4. William lived less than a month. John died at five and was buried at Westhorpe in August 1559. Joan married Nicholas Preston at Westhorpe in 1564 and Mary married Robert Poolam there in 1569.
On 12 October 1567, at twenty-six, Katherine married John Clarke at Westhorpe. He was the son of a Finningham yeoman and had come into his father's lands the year before. They lived in both parishes, and mostly at Westhorpe once her father was dead. They had seven children between 1569 and 1581: John, Thomas, Carewe, Christopher, Joan, Margaret and Mary. The third son carried her family's other name, and in 1603 her grandson was christened Carew too.
She died in the spring of 1598 and was buried at Finningham on 30 March. Her husband was buried nine days later. Her son Thomas entered it in the Bible: "Katherine Kooke, my mother, was buried the : 30 of March : 1598."
