Laura Jemima Witherell was born on 8 December 1854 in Iowa. Her death certificate gives the place as "Louisa Center", probably Louisa County in the southeast of the state. Her parents were A. D. Witherell and Mary Woodruff.

On 2 January 1871, aged sixteen, she married Edward Dudley Taber in Knox County, Illinois. He had just come home from three years with the army in Wyoming. By October 1873 they were in Ellis County, Texas, where their daughter Laura Blanche was born. In 1880 they were farming there, with Edward's father William in the house.

She lived to see her daughter married to the lawyer William Madison Tidwell and two grandchildren born. She died at Ennis on 11 February 1928, aged 73, still married after fifty-seven years. She is buried in Myrtle Cemetery beside her husband. Her headstone, with a cross and crown above her name, reads "LAURA J. / WIFE OF EDWARD D. TABER / DEC. 8, 1854 / FEB. 11, 1928 / A LOVING WIFE; A DEVOTED MOTHER".
