Laura Lee Radke
Laura Lee Radke was born in August 1939, the eldest child of Rollie F. Radke and Dorothy I. Sellens, in the Russian-German farming country of Barton County, Kansas. Her father was a maintenance serviceman for the power company, KPL, at Great Bend and Ellinwood. Four brothers and a sister followed her: Warren in 1944, Jake in 1949, Rose, and Donald in 1956. Her grandparents on both sides were the children of Lutheran colonists from the Russian steppe, Radkes from Bessarabia and Boxbergers from the Volga, who had broken the prairie around Milberger and Hoisington in the 1870s.
She married Guy Sekavec, an Army sergeant from the Arkansas mountains thirteen years older than herself. They settled in the Wichita area, where Guy worked at Gates Learjet. Their children were Charles, Shari, Mary, born in 1962 at Wichita, and Anna. By 1986 the family was at Derby, south of the city.
She died at Derby on Saturday 16 February 1991, aged 51. The memorial was for the American Cancer Society. The Wichita Eagle printed her notice the next day: "Derby. Laura L. Sekavec, 51, homemaker, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 1991. Service 10 a.m. Tuesday, Hillside Funeral Home. Survivors: son, Charles of Olney, Texas; daughters, Shari Griffin of Haysville, Mary Askins of Derby, Anna Barrientos of Wichita; father, Rollie Radke of Ellinwood; brothers, Warren Radke of Wichita, Jake Radke of Cushing, Okla., Donald Radke of Colorado; sister, Rose Furrey of Great Bend; 10 grandchildren."
