Dorothy Irene Sellens
Dorothy Irene Sellens was born on 8 July 1920 at Hoisington, Barton County, Kansas, the daughter of Warren Sherman Sellens and Laura E. Shell. In the state census of 1925 she was at home in Barton County with her parents and Gertrude, Roy and Warren; her brother Richard was born at Hoisington that September. By 1930 the family had moved to Blue Township in Jackson County, Missouri, outside Kansas City, where the census found Dorothy, 9, with Gertrude, Richard, Roy, Mary and Warren.
She married Rollie F. Radke, eleven years older, a Russian-German's grandson from the Milberger country, and their first child Laura Lee was born in August 1939. Warren followed in 1944, Jake in 1949, Rose, and Donald in 1956, the three younger boys all born at Great Bend. The family lived at Great Bend and Ellinwood, where Rollie was a maintenance serviceman for the power company. Her mother died in 1954 and her father in 1964, both buried at Pomona in Franklin County.
Dorothy died at Ellinwood on Thursday 8 May 1980, aged 59. The Wichita paper's notice listed her husband; her sons Warren of Wichita, Jake of Ellinwood and Donald of Gorham; her daughters Mrs. Laura Sekavec of Derby and Mrs. Rose Furrey of Great Bend; her brothers Roy Sellens of Overbrook, Warren Sellens of Ottawa and Richard Sellens of Great Falls, Montana; and her sisters Gertrude Fields of Washburn, Missouri, and Mary Walston of Texas. The service was at 2 p.m. on the Monday, Kimple Funeral Home directing, and the memorial was for the Kansas Crippled Children's Association. She is buried at Lakin Comanche Cemetery, where Rollie joined her seventeen years later. Her sons' obituaries name her as Dorothy (Sellens) Radke and, in full, Dorothy Irene.
