Laverne Iola Farmer
Laverne Iola Farmer was born on 22 January 1925 at Fyffe, DeKalb County, Alabama. Fyffe is a farm town on Sand Mountain, the long plateau in the northeast corner of the state. Her parents were Theodore Roosevelt Farmer and Ruby Pearl Green. They had married at Fyffe on 23 September 1923, so Laverne was their first child.
Eight more followed: Lavoulia Ione in 1928, Thomas Delmous in 1930, Betty Ruth in 1933, Flora Belle, Elmous, Bill, Dallas Lee in 1939 and Alice in 1940. The family stayed in DeKalb County and the counties around it. Betty Ruth was born at Ider, a few miles north of Fyffe, and Dallas at Gadsden.
Laverne married John Russell Timberman, called Jack, of Elmer, New Jersey. He served in the Army in the Second World War. The records found do not say where or when they married. She went north with him to Salem County, New Jersey, a long way from Sand Mountain.
In April 1950 she was 25 and keeping house in Elmer. Jack drove a truck for his father's trucking company. They had two small children, John Russell, 3, and Laverne Dale, 2. Jack's parents lived in the house next door. Two more daughters came later, Sarah Gail and Debra Lynn, the youngest born in 1957.
Laverne died on 22 March 2004, aged 79. She was buried at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Elmer. Jack was buried beside her ten years later, and their names share one stone. Her daughter Sarah Gail had died before her.
Her Alabama family remembered her. When her sister Alice Huckabee died in 2012, the obituary in the Chattanooga Times Free Press named Laverne among the brothers and sisters.
