Theodore Roosevelt Farmer
Theodore Roosevelt Farmer was born on 29 May 1901 in Alabama. That spring Theodore Roosevelt had just become vice president of the United States, and in September he became president. Theodore went by a short form of his middle name. On his marriage licence he is T. Rose Farmer.
His parents were Henry F. Farmer and Susan I. Farmer. Henry was Alabama born and Susan came from Georgia. In 1910 the family lived in the Corinth precinct of DeKalb County. Theodore was 8. His brothers and sisters at home were Claud, Maud, Wallace, Floyd and William.
He married Ruby Pearl Green at Fyffe, DeKalb County, Alabama, on 23 September 1923. Fyffe sits on Sand Mountain, the plateau that runs across the northeast corner of Alabama into Tennessee and Georgia.
They had nine children. Laverne Iola came first, born at Fyffe on 22 January 1925. Then came Lavoulia Ione in 1928, Thomas Delmous in 1930, Betty Ruth in 1933, Flora Belle, Elmous, Bill, Dallas Lee in 1939 and Alice in 1940. Betty Ruth was born at Ider, on the mountain a few miles north of Fyffe. Dallas was born at Gadsden, in Etowah County.
Laverne, the eldest, married a New Jersey soldier, Jack Timberman, and moved to Elmer, New Jersey. The rest of the family stayed near the mountain or just across the Tennessee line. Lavoulia died in 1964, at 36.
Theodore died on 23 May 1979, six days short of his 78th birthday. He was buried at James Cemetery, near Bryant, at the top of Sand Mountain in Jackson County. Ruby lived another twelve years and was buried beside him. Their stone reads "Gone But Not Forgotten".
