Leo Pomerantz
Leo Pomerantz was born in Russia about 1891 or 1892. He came to America in 1906, in his teens, and married Fanny Reiss, a Jewish girl from Austrian Galicia. They had three daughters, all born in New York: Helen about 1914, Sylvia about 1918, and Jeanne in May 1921.
The young family lived first in Manhattan. In January 1920 the census found them in the sixth assembly district: Leo, 29, Fanny, 27, Helen, 5, and Sylvia, not quite two.
In 1930 the census found Leo, 38, and his wife, 38, in Brooklyn with Helen, 15, Silvia, 12, and Janneen, 8. Leo's parents had both been born in Russia; his wife's birthplace was given as Austria. By 1935 the family was living at 317 Riverdale Avenue in Brownsville, at the corner of Stone Avenue. In April 1940 they were still there, paying $35 a month. Leo was 47, Fannie 45, Sylvia 21 and Jeanne 19. Leo had taken out his first citizenship papers. His eldest daughter Helen had married George Steinhart in Brooklyn on 21 November 1936.
The next building on the census taker's route that day was 693 Stone Avenue. Two years later Jeanne, now Mrs. Jean Feld, was living there with her husband Irving Feld. Irving had grown up across the way at 710 Stone Avenue.
In April 1950 Leo and Fanny were still at 317 Riverdale Avenue, in apartment 9. Leo was 58, a naturalized citizen, working forty hours a week in linoleum, in the rug trade. Fanny was 56. Sharing their apartment were Irving Feld, 29, a watchmaker, his wife Jean, 28, and their children Sharon, 6, and Bruce, 2. In the next apartment lived Abraham and Sylvia Steuerman, both 31, with two small sons.
