Leopold Kahler
Leopold Kahler was born in Germany in April 1866. His father, John A. Kahlar, was a glass maker, and his mother was Mary Nothise. Both of his parents were born in Germany. He came to the United States in 1880, at about fourteen.
By 1892 he was living in Boston and working at his father's trade, as a glass maker. That spring he and Theresa Adeline Gebhardt, a 21 year old Boston girl born in New York City, went across the state line to East Providence, Rhode Island, and filed their intention to marry there. The town clerk recorded it on 23 April 1892. He wrote Leopold's name as Kahlar. It was the first marriage for both.
The children came quickly. George F. was born about 1893, Emily about 1894, Mary, called Mamie, about 1896, and Joseph F. E. about 1898. In June 1900 the family was living in Ward 23 of Boston. Leopold was 34. Theresa's brother Joseph Gebhardt, 20, lived with them. William Lewis followed in 1903, Frances Josephine Ellen on 20 July 1906, and Robert on 22 July 1910.
Theresa died on 4 February 1911, at 36. Robert was six months old. She was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Roslindale.
Leopold did not remarry. His daughter Mary, then Mrs. William P. Doyle, died in Boston on 25 May 1919, aged 22. In January 1920 Leopold was 53, a widower, and living in South Boston with five of his children: Emily, 25, Joseph, 21, William, 16, Frances, 14, and Robert, 9. Charles Maloy, 27, and a little girl, Marion Maloy, 3, also lived in the house. His son George had married Margaret A. Mone in Boston in 1916.
