Robert J. Kahler
Robert J. Kahler was born on 22 July 1910 in Boston. His parents were Leopold Kahler, a glass maker from Germany, and Theresa Adeline Gebhardt, a New Yorker of German family. He was the youngest of their seven children.
His mother died on 4 February 1911, when he was six months old. His father never remarried. In January 1920 Robert was 9 and living in South Boston with his widowed father, then 53, and his brothers and sisters Emily, Joseph, William and Frances. His sister Mary had died the year before, aged 22.
He married Sarah N. Hyder, who was born in Massachusetts about 1913. Their elder son, Robert John Jr., was born in Boston on 24 July 1940, two days after his father's thirtieth birthday. A second son, Peter M., was born in February 1950.
When the census taker, Edward F. Kearns, came on 6 April 1950, the family lived on the third floor of a Boston house. Robert, 39, worked in automobile parts control for an automobile sales agency and had worked 52 hours the week before. Sarah, 36, kept house. Robert Jr. was 9 and Peter was two months old. They had a lodger, Muriel M. May, 25, from New Hampshire, a registered nurse at the city health clinic.
His son Robert Jr. died in June 1968, aged 27, leaving a widow, Hazel, and young sons. Robert J. Kahler died in Boston on 10 February 1975, his last home in Plymouth County. He is buried in Hanover Center Cemetery, Hanover, beside his son. Sarah lived until 1990 and is buried there too.
