Leta Lavone McCaskey
Leta Lavone McCaskey was born on 31 March 1939 on a farm near Fairview in Major County, Oklahoma, the third daughter of Bert Cecil McCaskey and Icy Vera Wilcox. She was a year old in April 1940, written Leta Lavaughn by the census taker, with her sisters Roberta, 5, and Patsy, 4. A brother, J. C., came about 1942, and a younger sister, Virginia, called Ginger. The girls walked to Cheyenne Valley country school. About 1949 the family moved to Woodward, the county seat to the northwest, and in April 1950 Lavone was 11 there.
She went by Lavone. In the late 1950s she married a Shepherd, and their three children were Larry, Sterling and Tonya, the last born at Enid in 1965. That marriage ended, and in 1982 she married Grubbs Abram Smith, an Enid man five years her senior who ran a cleaning business and had three children of his own by his first wife. They made their home in Enid. Her son Larry died before she did, and so did a grandson, Chase, and her sister Patsy Stephens.
She died on Sunday 28 November 2021 at Wakita, a small town in Grant County near the Kansas line, aged 82. The funeral was at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home in Enid on 2 December, the Rev. Gary Miller officiating, and she was buried that afternoon in Elmwood Cemetery at Woodward, where her parents lie. Grubbs lived nine months longer, died of cancer on 9 September 2022, and was buried beside her by the same pastor. She left her son Sterling at Wakita, her daughter Tonya Gray and Tonya's husband Stuart, three stepchildren, her brother J. C. and her sisters Roberta Morrison and Ginger Osborne, fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
