Icy Vera Wilcox
Icy Vera Wilcox was born on 23 February 1915 at Fairview, Major County, Oklahoma, the daughter of James H. Wilcox and Elsie V. Vannostrand, as she wrote on her Social Security application. Her parents, James Homer Wilcox and Elsie Viola Vannostrand, both from Kansas, had married in Major County on 21 May 1914, nine months before she was born. In January 1920 she was 5, written Isa by the census taker, with her parents and two younger brothers, Laurence and Locie. With Bert Cecil McCaskey she had five children: Roberta Pauline in 1934, Patsy Mae in 1935, Leta Lavone in 1939, J. C. about 1942 and Virginia, called Ginger. In April 1940, aged 25, she was on the farm in Crowell Township, Major County, with Bert and the three small girls; the census taker wrote her name Ley.
The family moved to Woodward about 1949. On 21 December 1951, in Harper County, she and Bert took out a marriage licence, she giving her birth year as 1915; why a couple with five children did so is not told. She kept house in Woodward through the 1950s and 1960s, listed with Bert in the city directories until 1972.
Bert died at Enid in July 1982. Icy lived nearly twenty years more and died on 25 November 2001, aged 86, at Enid, where her daughters Lavone and Roberta both later lived. The Oklahoman carried the notice: "McCASKEY, Icy Vera, 86. Services Wednesday, Woodward (Good Samaritan, Woodward)." She was buried beside Bert in Elmwood Cemetery, Woodward, under a pink granite stone: "ICY V. McCASKEY. FEB. 23, 1915. NOV. 25, 2001. AT REST WITH GOD."
