Levi Fetty was born on 15 May 1831 in the Hannan District of Mason County, the youngest of the eight children of Vinson Fetty and Rachel Shuman. He married Sarah Narcissa Cremeans at Mason County on 1 July 1863, when he was thirty three and she was twenty nine, and the clerk wrote her down as Narcipa Cormeons.
By 1880 they are still in the Hannan District with eight children at home, from Gallatian at seventeen down to Robert at two, and ten in all before he was done.
He died on 1 February 1885, aged fifty three, in the district he was born in. The county register that carries him gives his birthplace as Hannan Dist. and his residence as the same, which is the whole of the geography of his life.
His widow outlived him by forty two years. She was fifty one when he died. She never remarried, kept house with her sons, and died at ninety three across the Ohio River in 1927.
The marriage return names his parents as Vincent and Rachel Fetty.
And there is a Levi Fetty in the Union army, which may be him. The Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Union Soldiers from West Virginia hold a LEVI FETTY, aged twenty nine, FOURTEENTH INFANTRY, 1862.
The case for it being this man is the regiment. The Fourteenth West Virginia was organised at Wheeling and Point Pleasant in the autumn of 1862, and its companies were raised in Mason, Cabell, Jackson, Wood, Ritchie and Kanawha. Point Pleasant is the county seat of the county he was born in, farmed in and died in, and the county his son died in sixty six years later. The age is two years out, which is ordinary on an enlistment.
The case against is that there are two Levi Fettys of this age in West Virginia: this one of Mason County, son of Vinson and Rachel, and another of Marion County, son of Jesse and Nancy, husband of a Sarah, who died nearly five months after him in the same year of 1885. Nothing in the service record names a county, so the regiment's recruiting ground is the whole of the argument. It is a strong reading and it is not a proof.
If it is him, he married Narcissa Cremeans on 1 July 1863, in the middle of his service, and four years later named his third son Levi Beauregard, after the Confederate general who opened the war.
